Plant selection and placement are important
for butterfly gardens.
Butterflies like warm sunny sites sheltered
from high winds. Rocks or bricks are needed for pupation,
and for basking and warming in the sun.
Butterflies require food plants for both
stages of development.
Nectar plants for the adult stage-Common
Sunflower, Sweet Alyssum, Zinnia, Verbena, Petunia, Salvia,
Snapdragon, Lantana, are a few to start.
Food plants for the larval stage are- Broccoli,
Cabbage, Dill, Parsley, Sunflower, and Snapdragons.
Some larvae feed on specific host plants,
while others will feed on a variety of plants. Include both
larval host plants and adult nectar plants in your butterfly
garden.
